A BUDDHIST APPROACH TO PEACE
by Nikkyo Niwano
The author consistently acts
on the Lotus Sutra principle that the problems of people anywhere are the
problems of all and that happiness cannot be realized for one person until
it is realized for all. As he makes clear, this principle can be employed
by anyone, regardless of religious affiliation, to enable people to work
together effectively for the great cause of peace in our lifetime. A tireless
worker for world peace, the author was a member of the Japanese Peace Delegation
of Religious Leaders for Banning Nuclear Weapons and has played active roles
in the World Conference on Religion and Peace, the Asian Conference on Religion
and Peace, and the International Association for Religious Freedom. It is
his firm conviction that interreligious cooperation, encouraging people
of different faiths to work together, is the key to achieving lasting peace.
NIKKYO NIWANO, author of The Richer Life and Buddhism for Today and winner of the 1979 Templeton Foundation Prize for Progress in Religion, is the founder of Rissho Kosei-kai, a lay Buddhist organization that numbers well over six million members worldwide.
