A PADA INDEX AND REVERSE PADA INDEX TO EARLY JAIN CANONS

The Ayaranga, Suyagada, Uttarajjhaya, Dasaveyaliya, and Isibhasiyaim

compiled by Moriichi Yamazaki and Yumi Ousaka
with a foreword by K. R. Norman

Scholars of Indian studies have long understood the importance of early Jain canons in elucidating contemporaneous early Buddhism but have been hampered by the lack of pada and reverse pada indexes to the canons. Now the vitally needed indexes are available. The compilers used personal computers to process a huge volume of text data from the five basic early canons of Jainism, written in Ardha-Magadhi, a Middle Indo-Aryan language with complex grammar. These indexes will help scholars not only analyze the early Jain and Buddhist canons but also produce critical editions of them. The indexes will facilitate textual analysis of vocabulary, structure, meter, and so on in a systematic way.

MORIICHI YAMAZAKI, Litt. D., professor at Sendai National College of Technology, specializes in early Buddhism and Jainism. YUMI OUSAKA, D. Sc., professor at Sendai National College of Technology, specializes in theoretical physics and computer analysis.

K. R. NORMAN is a professor emeritus of Cambridge University and a former president of the Pali Text Society.
